USA Surfing confirms Paddleboard USA Championships to be held in partnership with the
16th Annual Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race
We gather to remember Jay Moriarity and paddle our hearts out in his honor! All proceeds will go to the Jay Moriarity Foundation to raise funds for Angel Warriors for Kids to help children who are battling pediatric cancer and other life threatening diseases, Junior Lifeguard Programs to purchase equipment and to provide scholarships in Jay’s name as well as other ocean related beneficiaries. Participants receive a goodie bag, t-shirt, race jersey (long course only), Peet’s Coffee, Clif Bars and other swag. Men PRONE: Stock, Fourteen & Unlimited paddleboards: Juniors 17 and under (STOCK CLASS ONLY), 18-49, and 50+

Women PRONE: Stock & Fourteen paddleboards: Juniors 17 and under (STOCK CLASS ONLY), 18-49, and 50+

Men SUP: 12’6″, Fourteen & Unlimited: Juniors 17 and under (12’6″ CLASS ONLY), 18-49, and 50+

Women SUP: 12’6″ & Fourteen: Juniors 17 and under (12’6″ CLASS ONLY), 18-49, and 50+

* Long Course Restrictions - If you are 15 years old or under, you must paddle the entire distance with another responsible adult (buddy paddle). However if you are 15 and under and have completed this race in the past, the race committee will decide if you can paddle solo.

All long course competitors must reach the Cowells buoy within an hour and a half after starting the race. If a competitor has not reached the Cowells buoy after an hour and a half, they will be redirected back along the first leg of the race course, back to the start. There will be no exceptions. If anyone does not comply with this rule they will be banned from racing any future Jay Races.


Men and Women: 10’6″ Sprint, Stock & fourteen paddleboards, 12’6″ SUP, 14′ SUP, SUP surfboard and Longboard: 18-49, and 50+

Boys and Girls 12 & under: 12’6″ SUP, and Stock paddleboard

Boys and Girls Juniors (13-17 years): 12’6″ SUP, and Stock paddleboard


Swim, SUP and Stock Prone Paddleboard – all three events are combined to determine the top male and female over-all waterman!

Waterman Challenge Divisions: 13-17, 18-49, 50+


We will provide kids age 12 and under with "Nipper" or Soft paddleboards to use. Course includes a short paddle around two buoys set just off the beach followed by a wild beach run/obstacle course to make the races more fun. Mini Jay Racers paddle around two buoys set just a few yards off the beach. After the paddle course competitors will run through the beach obstacle course then back out onto the water for another lap. Kids collect “Live Like Jay” wristbands every time they finish the obstacle course. Mini Jay Racers will receive one raffle ticket for every bracelet they collect! There will be plenty of Lifeguards on hand to keep everyone safe.


Friday, June 16th from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Surftech Santa Cruz Showroom – 912 41st Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95062. You can still register for the race for a discounted price, review the course maps and talk story with your fellow competitors. This is a great time to meet other paddlers, discuss race tactics, and ponder the Monterey Bay currents. Food and beer available on a first come, first served basis! Food provided by PONO HAWAIIAN GRILL and beer donated by Discretion Brewing!


Opening Ceremony - 8:00 am we will have a ceremony to honor the great Santa Cruz Waterman Jay Moriarity.

Long Course PRONE - 8:30 am beach start

Long Course SUP - 8:40 am beach Start

Short Course (all) - 8:50 am beach start for all paddleboarders and stand-ups. It is an out-and-back course. There will be plenty of Lifeguards patrolling the course. The winds are usually calm and the swell small. This is a great course for beginners.

Kids "Mini Jay Race" - 11:00 am Kids races will begin when long and short course competitors are finished. We will provide kids age 12 and under with Nipper or Soft paddleboards to use.

Waterman Challenge - 1:00 pm The Waterman Challenge will start at 1:00 pm after the kids “Mini Jay Race” is over.

Awards - 4:00 pm Awards Ceremony will be held on the beach at the race site.

Post Party - Jay Race after party will be held at TBD.


RAFFLE – bring your checkbook to the beach to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win great prizes including wetsuits, paddleboards, bicycles, a Jay Moriarity model longboard and more…


Plenty of parking is available in the Capitola Village parking lot above the venue. Be prepared to pay for parking. Restrooms are located at the race site.
